What Happens During a Lash Lift?

We are going to go step by step, telling you everything you need to know before you get your first lash lift. What happens, who its best for, and what to avoid after getting one. Lets dive right in.

First, lets talk about who this service would apeal most to. Lash lifts perm your natural lashes, giving them more curl, and also making them appear longer. This is best for people who aren't looking for added volume and perfer the more naturally enhanced look. Pairing it with a tint will give you the no mascara, mascara look. I personally love getting them in the summer time, cutting my get ready time down, and still having great lashes during all the outside activites. To keep up with the lift, you would need to return every 6-8 weeks, giving you a good amount of time inbetween appointments. See my lash lift vs extensions post to go more into the differences between the two to see whats right for you.

Now that we have decided the lash lift seems like its right for you, lets go into the steps on what will actually happen during your appointment. It's best to come in without any eye makeup on, that way no product will affect the outcome of your lift.

  1. Eye area will be thoroughly cleansed to ensure no product or oil is on your lashes.

  2. You and your professional will discuss your desired outcome, I have two different styles you can choose from. There are rods and shields. A rod is a complete curl, the lashes will be lifted from the base, and the tips will curl backwards towards your eyelid forming a C shape. A shield will only provide a lift from the base of your lashes, leaving the ends straight. The lashes tend to look longer with the shields since you dont lose any length with the curl going back towards your lid. Pictures are included at the bottom.

  3. Once you and your professional has decided on a curl type, the professional will then go in and determine what size they will use based off how long your lashes are.

  4. Bottom lashes will then be taped down with an eyepad. This ensures that the bottom lashes dont get in the way or be permed upwards into your eye.

  5. Eyes will now remain closed for the rest of the service. The desired rod or shield will then be place on your lid, right agaist your lash line. A water removable glue will be placed on your lashes to stick them up on the rod, and combed through to make sure all the lashes are evenly spaced and not crossed over each other.

  6. These next two steps will depend on what system your professional uses, but most use a two step solution. The first solution gets places right above your waterline. Its important to keep your eyes closed, minimal talking and eye movements while the solutions are on your lashes. This first solution goes into the hair shafts and breaks down the way they are structured, allowing the lashes to then be set into the new desired structure in the next step. With the system I use, this step takes up to 8 minutes

  7. The first solution is then wiped off with a Q-tip, and then we proceed on to the next solution so we can get that nice new structure. This solution is also placed right above your water line. With the system I use, this step takes up to 5 minutes.

  8. The second solution is then wiped off with a Q-tip again.

  9. We could stop here, and go into the eye bath, but I highly reccomend a lash tint with all lift services. When putting a perm solution on, it tends to lighten the hairs, so going in with a tint after will really make them stand out. If you chose to go for the tint, that is placed all over the lashes, root to tip, to ensure a rich and even color. This step takes 10 to 20 minutes.

  10. After all is said and done, the lashes are then gently removed for the rod or shield using water. The rods are removed from the eyelid, and then your eyes will be rinsed with water to ensure all product is clean from the eye area.

  11. Lashes are then dried and brushed to give them their fluffy look! And now you're finally able to open your eyes to see your beautiful new lashes.

Now that your lashes look stunning, we gotta take care of them. Its best to avoid water, steam, or anything hot and sweaty for 24 hours. Try to sleep on your back, or at least not smush your lashes into your pillow for the first 24 hours as well. But after that? Youre good to go! You can wash your face as normal with whatever your perffered products are after that 24 hour mark. It truly is the best service for the clients looking for something lower maintenance but still want a little extra umph to their lashes.
