What is an Esthetician?

There are many Estheticians out there, but what is an Esthetician exactly? Well depending on the state you live in, there could be differences in what an Estheticians license actually allows you to preform. In the state of Michigan, Estheticians are required to attend school for 600 hours, where they learn the ins and outs of skin care and full body waxing.

My favorite thing about being an Esthetician is all the different avenues you can take within your esthetics career. There are multiple different certifications Estheticians can get, to add on more services that they didn't learn in school. Some Estheticians prefer to go more of the medical route and pair up with a dermatologist to do more intensive peels or even prepping for injections such as lip filler or botox. Other Estheticians like myself, prefer to go more of the beauty route.

Under an esthetics license in Michigan, you're allowed to preform full body waxing, body treatments, makeup applications and facials, but what about all the other services out there? Thats when the certifications come in. Once you obtain an esthetics license, a whole new world opens up to allow you to take additional classes to expand your service range and knowledge. A few would be lash extensions, lash lifts, brow lamination, and dermaplaining. Although the state of Michigan doesn't recognize certifications, it's still a good idea to take an official class or pair up with another Esthetician who took an official class to learn from. This way you are insuring that you are indeed performing the service safely and properly for the client recieving them.

Estheticians are important to the world because we are able to make our clients feel beautiful and comfortable in their skin. The beauty world is forever changing and evolving, creating new and better services/products every day. Everyone needs a little pick me up from time to time and seeing a client happy and excited after completing a service is one of my biggest sources of gratification. If you're interested in skin care and the beauty industry, it's the perfect profession for you.
